Finished the last working day in my forties. I’ve no idea how that happened.

I’d love to see iPad OS “window” management be considerably less fragile. For example breaking Split View given half the chance, or randomly removing an app in Slide Over. We’d all love to see much more besides this, but reliability should be top of the list.

Since I’ve thought about replacing my iPad mini and possibly even the pencil with a new iPad Pro, I figure own it to myself to first test using the iPad as exclusively as I can over the course of the next week. I unfortunately have to work on a Windows PC so this isn’t one of those. Can I do my work on my iPad tests? It’s more can I use my iPad as my go to device than my phone and my Mac?

Here’s to the last Saturday night in my 40’s. By this next week it will be a whole new thing.

Find myself looking the new iPad Air even if I don’t know why and have no apparent use for an iPad larger than my beloved iPad mini.

About time too.

Well done “F” for putting up with me. Heard to believe but 12 months ago today I stepped out of my flat for the last time, handing in the keys to estate agent. We were already living together but then it was official. We just had the weeks to wait until we got the keys to our own home and the onslaught of DIY that would ensue. But the place looks great and shows what can be achieved in a year.

Like many, I’ve tried and failed to use an iPad like I use a Mac. The promise of iOS has not lived up to expectations, not even with the introduction of trackpad support and Stage Manager.

The reality is Apple likes the iPad and it’s OS just where it is: a simpler computing platform at a lower cost point. Afterall an iPad is a single display, single port device, where keyboards and other peripherals are supported at a healthy margin. This is the perfect onboarding device for non-nerds to extend the capabilities of their iPhone onto a larger format, without the burden of a full PC laptop/desktop.

Put it another way, if you graphed both Mac and iPad on the same chart of price (x) and capability (y), then there would be 2 overlapping circles but with minimum overlap. These are distinct products, the Mac for complex tasks and iPad for simpler tasks. As much as overlap continues to grow this will always be compromised by the low precision of a touch-first interface, even with a trackpad icon and Stage Manager.

Another OS feature that failed to deliver.

I can’t help but fold wrappers. I’ve been doing that since I was 16.

I have 320 Shortcuts and utilise less than 32 with any frequency. I think it’s time to “bring out your dead”

Successfully subscribed mindnode to an app that let’s pay for the subscription but not install the app due to OS compatibility. Presumably OS compatibility should be checked before the upgrade now screen. Naturally I’ve cancelled my subscription.

Regrettably I’ve cancelled my subscription for Glass. This is a beautiful photography app and essential for anyone publishing a lot of photos. However I’ve found that I’m just making enough use of it.

Everyone finds new approaches which they can’t support, preferring consistency over revolution.

For me this is increasingly the “AI” bubble which has the best marketing even if the results are underwhelming. I’ve been unimpressed by the automated interpretation (AI) of existing data sources without context or awareness.

True AI is a hard problem and not likely within my lifetime, and I’m ok with that. But let’s not pretend that filtering the internet is a sign of intelligence.

Found myself engrossed in a video on why Mickey Mouse is famous, and it’s not the character or even what you can see.

Tired of feeling cold. Some warmer weather can’t come soon enough.
