My personal debate on new hardware
Debating (with myself) the Pros & Cons of an Apple laptop for personal use. The debate forks quickly into,
- Macbook Air vs 12" Macbook
- New vs Apple Refurbished vs Used (eBay)
- New hardware vs existing hardware & workarounds
It’s not all about cost. That’s significant, but not everything.
My usage is driven by lifestyle, and it not always being convenient to sit at my iMac due to family reasons and the layout of the house. But despite it not being a current model I’m reluctant to trade it for an upgrade.
Importantly I’m questioning both a new computer or continuing to use iOS (iPhone or iPad) my very lightweight use. And my use cases are particularly light, both in hardware needs and in time spent using the hardware. My workarounds are in iOS and in screen sharing to my iMac. Both of which are served my needs for a while, particularly iOS of course, even if my personal preference is for larger displays and a cursor-based OS.
Double “Done”. Clearly no other option.

That Other Hops May Live…
I’ve so far resisted installing either the Micro.blog app or MarsEdit on my work issued MacBook Pro. I feel that’s just the start of a slippery slope which leads to the valley of unproductive days.
Noticed that my frequency of posting to DayOne has plummeted since I started a Micro.blog account.

Every time I ctrl+click on a Microsoft Office app on my Mac I’m amazed that there’s no “Create New” option. That’s staggering.

More use of Keyboard Maestro
For any Mac user not using Keyboard Maestro then OMG are you missing out.
I’ve seen its power before but today I found myself wanting to link OmniFocus tasks, writing the notes in Bear.
I’m not a programmer, or at least I’ve written a line of code in nearly 20 years. But just by following the steps I’d take and adding them to Keyboard Maestro I was able to create an automated workflow.
So now typing >bear in OmniFocus, KM kicks in to copy a link to the task, creates a new appropriately tagged Bear note, adds the OmniFocus link, then goes and grabs the task title, inserting this as the title of the note. The link for the note is then inserted back into OmniFocus, replacing the >bear text with a link to the note in Bear. The back and forth happens in under a second.
On iOS the Workflow app has always been a mystery to me in ways that KM has seemed obvious by comparison.
Update : my failing single AirPod (out of warranty) was replaced for free by Apple under “consumer law”. Fabulous.
I’ve been thinking over addictive personality. A side to this is my unwillingness to give up, even just to give up and go to sleep.
However enough is enough. At least for today. I have to get up in 6 hours, so any later and I really will regret it.
What’s the best alternatives to Lightroom? ( @johnholzer @jack ?) I’ve been using an inherited copy of Lightroom 3 for 3-4 years and it’s looking like I’ll have to upgrade or move to something else as I update macOS (from 10.12)

Just seen a commercial for body shaving products for men. Speechless 😶
